History of Grayson
The influential people behind the formation of Grayson can be seen across the landscape of Grayson today in the names given to streets and buildings.
Grayson used to go by the name Trip.John Ellery Jacobs, the postmaster and local leader, requested that Trip, Georgia be renamed Berkley, Georgia in a letter to the post office department in 1901. The Georgia General Assembly enacted legislation to incorporate the town and change its name on December 6, 1901. Ellery Jacobs was quickly notified that Berkley, Georgia already existed. Graymount (which had a wonderful view of Stone Mountain) was next on his list, but it was already taken. Grayson, Georgia was his next suggestion.
